About Andy Robertson
A graduate (cum laude) from the University of Ottawa in 1979, Mr. Robertson articled with a prominent labour and litigation firm in Ottawa, Nelligan/Power, and after completing the Ontario Bar Admission Course he furthered his career in Calgary, Alberta.
He became a prominent employment, human rights, and commercial trial lawyer, mostly in Calgary, and he argued cases before all levels of Courts. He spent most of his career with Macleod Dixon LLP. He was Chair of the Employment and Labour Practice Group for approximately 17 years, and in addition he was responsible for organizing the firm’s internal continuing education program (“Insider Training”). He rose to become a Senior Partner with the firm, known after its merger as Norton Rose Fulbright.
During this period, Mr. Robertson was a much in-demand public speaker on a variety of legal topics, including Employment, Human Rights, Alcohol and Drug Testing and Employers’ Rights, and Foreclosure Law.
In 2013 he was appointed as Master in Chambers with the Court of Queen’s Bench (the name of the position was changed in 2022 to “Applications Judge”), and while on the Court he was frequently asked to speak at continuing education presentations by the Legal Education Society of Alberta (LESA) and other organizations.
He retired from the Court as a full-time Master in 2020 and continued as an ad hoc Master until April 2022. He is now fully retired from the Court.
After 32 years as a courtroom lawyer and 7 years as a Master in Chambers of the Court of Queen’s Bench of Alberta, Mr. Robertson now provides alternative dispute resolution services as a mediator and both commercial and labour arbitrator based in Calgary, Alberta.
Mr. Robertson has been admitted to the Grievance Arbitration Roster established by Alberta Labour and Immigration.
